The relief and then the pain as day 1 finishes. The guy in the red T shirt passed me with about 2 miles to go. Having read the back of my T shirt, he ran me in to the finish pace making for me. He is a star.

Well, I have waited 43 years for someone to write a poem for and about me.

My good friend Paul Christopher put together the below. Touched and humbled doesn’t even come close to how I feel receiving this….., Paul I will treasure this

Running for Life

An ode to Phil King

This man is building up his body

All others have not known

Running daily to strengthen his mind, muscle and bone

This man has determination

That his demons cannot beat

Running daily with nails torn

From the toes of his feet

This man has been up 3 mountains

But not running I hasten to add

‘This is not enough’ he cries

To take away all the bad

This man to encounter a trail hard and long

With hope of no trips nor falls

May his chosen God be with him

While running for this good cause

Paul "Paddington" Davies

30 years ago a friendship was formed following a fight in the Chemistry Lab at School with a kid I had never met before. The fight, apparently over a girl, caused me to flunk my Chemistry, being a geek that was hard to take, and neither of us got the girl!

However, the friendship that formed that day became stronger than any brotherly relationship, and remains as tight today as it always has been. My (little) bigger bro, Paul Davies aka Paddington, has played a major part during my life keeping the good ship King steering in a straightish line, even when it has gone slightly off course and run aground a few times!

Paddington has had his fair share of mountains to climb in his life, having faced many personal crisis and tradegies - be it health problems, loss of close loved ones, yet he always found the strength and courage to be strong. And through it all he never blamed life for the cards he had been dealt.

I’ve learnt a lot from my little friend over the years, and always looked up to him (not literally!!), aspiring to conduct myself with the same integrity and humbleness.

Alas he works in Angola so cannot be there to cheer me home. But as sure as day turns to night I know he will feel every single step I take…..

Proud to be making a difference.
